Open any modern slot’s paytable and the symbols arrange themselves into two obvious tiers. At the bottom, a set of low-value icons that appear constantly. At the top, a handful of themed symbols worth many times more. The ratio between those extremes is one of the more informative numbers in the whole game, and it takes a few seconds to read.
What a wide gap means
If the premium symbol pays fifty times what the lowest one does for the same combination length, the game’s value is concentrated in outcomes that involve the premium. Those outcomes are, by construction, rare: the reel strips carry fewer copies of high-value symbols, which is exactly why they are worth more.
A wide gap therefore signals variance before you have looked at the volatility rating. Most spins will land the common symbols, most wins will be small, and the sessions that stand out will be the ones where the premiums stack. That is the profile of a high-volatility game described in a way that is checkable rather than asserted.
What a narrow gap means
The opposite. When the top symbol is worth eight or ten times the bottom rather than fifty, the value is spread across many more outcomes and the session feels steadier. These games rarely produce a memorable result, but they also rarely produce a run of nothing, and the balance descends gently instead of lurching.
Reading it on a specific title
The paytable in the Release the Kraken demo can be opened before a single spin, and the two numbers worth writing down are the five-of-a-kind value for the highest symbol and the same for the lowest. Dividing one by the other gives the ratio, and comparing that ratio across several candidate games is more informative than comparing their volatility labels.
Worth noting alongside: how many distinct symbols sit in each tier, and whether the low tier is card ranks or themed icons. Card ranks are the older convention and generally indicate a paytable built on the classic template; themed low symbols usually mean a more considered design, though not necessarily a better game.

The scatter subtlety
Scatter payments are frequently expressed as a multiple of total stake while line wins are multiples of the line bet. On a forty-line game those two bases differ by a factor of forty, which makes a scatter paying three times stake worth considerably more than a line win paying three times the line bet. Paytables state which basis applies, but they state it in small print and it is very easy to compare the wrong quantities.
Why this beats the volatility label
Because the label is a single word chosen by the studio with no standard definition behind it. The symbol ratio is a number the developer had to publish, computed from the actual paytable, and it points at the same underlying property. One is marketing vocabulary; the other is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is right there on the screen for anyone who opens the panel.
